Odorized Liquefied Petroleum Gas Testing (LPG)
Odorized LPG gas testing.
Testing for the presence of mercaptan odorizers in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is provided by Intertek laboratories. Intertek helps clients monitor the concentration of mercaptan odorizer in LPG products across distribution points and facilities.
Testing for the presence and quantity of the odorant in the product is performed by ASTM D-5305, for the determination of ethyl mercaptan in LPG Vapors. ASTM-5305 can also be conducted on-site at distribution points and facilities.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas has almost no odor when produced at the refinery. To protect consumers and workers near or handling LPG, ethyl mercaptan is added in trace quantities as an odorizer. Mercaptan has a strong, unpleasant odor which is readily detectable and serves as a warning in the event of an LPG leak from tanks or pipes.
Intertek laboratories test with gas chromatography and other trace analysis analytical laboratory methods to detect and measure trace amounts of a wide variety of chemical compounds and contaminants in gases and chemicals.
Natural gas liquids testing (NGLs) is also available.
