Emily F. Madden, Ph.D., D.A.B.T., Senior Scientific & Regulatory Manager I, Food & Nutrition

Dr. Emily Madden is a toxicologist with diverse experience in the dietary supplement and pharmaceutical industries and in toxicology consulting. Prior to working at Intertek Assuris, Dr. Madden was a Senior Scientist II in Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines Group at United States Pharmacopeia where she conducted safety assessments of dietary supplement ingredients proposed for USP-NF monograph development. 

Dr. Madden also previously worked as a toxicology consultant where some of her projects included writing comprehensive safety evaluations for dietary ingredients in Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) reports and assessing the safety of dietary ingredient overages in dietary supplement products. 

Dr. Madden also served as the company toxicologist for a dietary supplement manufacturer and her responsibilities included assessing the safety of dietary supplements, food ingredients, personal care products and essential oils and investigating serious adverse events. As the company toxicologist, she also wrote comprehensive safety evaluations for dietary supplement ingredients in self-determined GRAS reports and developed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for evaluating product safety and investigating adverse events.
 
In addition, Dr. Madden was a Study Director for a contract research organization where she directed preclinical toxicology studies assessing the safety of new pharmaceuticals for submission to regulatory agencies. Dr. Madden is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology who earned a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and a B.S. in Biochemistry from the State University of New York at Geneseo. Dr. Madden was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U.S. 

Food and Drug Administration where she investigated rodent models of subclinical kidney injury for use in the safety assessment of medical device materials. Dr. Madden also served in the U.S. Army where she researched and developed microencapsulation and sustained-release drug formulations and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her contributions.
