Standard: ASTM B117 – Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus

Scope: This practice covers the apparatus, procedure, and conditions required to create and maintain the salt spray (fog) test environment.

Applicable Products: Any Metallic product that will be in a corrosive or damp environment.

Test Procedure: The product shall be cleaned and prepared according to the standard. The specimens will then be placed in the salt chamber. Unless otherwise specified, the specimens shall be supported or suspended with the surface of interest at an angle between 15° and 30° from the vertical. The products shall be subjected to a pressurized 5% concentration salt spray for an agreed period. The period of exposure shall be as designated by the specifications covering the material or product being tested or as mutually agreed upon between the purchaser and the seller. The specimen may then be removed and gently washed in hot running water and immediately dried before evaluation.

End Result: This practice does not prescribe the type of test specimen or exposure periods to be used for a specific product, nor the interpretation to be given to the results. Test results can be evaluated visually or per ASTM D610 depending on the client’s request. A comprehensive test report will be issued at the conclusion of the testing
