INTERTEK EXPERT BIOGRAPHIES
Marvin Cohn
- ASME Fellow
- Director of high energy piping with Intertek’s Asset Integrity Management team
Over the past 40 years, Mr. Cohn has written more than 170 reports and published more than 60 technical papers, including 8 professional journal papers. Many of these technical papers regarding high energy piping systems subject to creep/fatigue damage have discussed the process of detailed and well-characterized data gathering, simulation of existing field conditions, evaluation of applicable creep/fatigue stresses, creep rupture life consumption in base material and weldments, and ranking of the most critical examination locations.
During the last 30 years, he has actively participated in the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code Committee, and he contributed to the ASME B31.1 recommended guidelines for post-construction power piping activities. Throughout the past 25 years, Marvin has participated in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Pressure Vessel and Piping Conferences where he presented papers, developed and chaired technical sessions, and edited Proceedings.
Mr. Cohn graduated with a B.S. in Physical Metallurgy from the University of Washington and obtained an M.S. in Engineering from the University of California. He has professional engineering licenses in the United States and Canada and has over 35 years of experience in the fields of engineering mechanics, stress analysis and metallurgy.
His recent work involves simulation of high energy piping calculated displacements to field measurements for more accurate stress predictions and remaining creep life estimates of main steam and hot reheat piping systems. Marvin has provided litigation support for disputes involving the contracted design of high energy steam piping.
Russell Cipolla
- Principal Engineer at Intertek Asset Integrity Management
Mr. Cipolla is an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) member, a member of the ASME Working Group on Operating Plant Criteria, and a Chairman of the ASME Section XI Working Group on Flaw Evaluation. He has participated in the ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping (PVP) Conferences throughout the years where he presented papers, chaired technical sessions, and edited Proceedings.
He has a professional engineering license in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University, and is a California Registered Professional Engineer.
Mr. Cipolla has experience with advanced applications of fracture mechanics; remaining life prediction methods; ductile fracture of metals; integrity of structures containing flaws; fitness-for-purpose analysis, finite element and singular integral equations analysis techniques; elastic-plastic and fully plastic analysis methods; transient heat transfer and thermal stress analysis; American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III and Section XI.
Throughout the past 30+ years, his projects and work included fatigue crack growth and fracture assessments of pressure vessels and piping in nuclear power plants, turbine rotors and component support structures; significance of radiation damage on fracture resistance and flaw tolerance of pressure vessel steels; flaw evaluations and retirement-for-cause of turbine rotors; stress corrosion cracking and leak before-break studies and analyses of stainless steel piping; steam generator tube cracking and leak rate predictions; instrumentation of BWR main recirculation loop piping; stress corrosion cracking and wastage of high strength bolting materials; statistical analysis of strength variability in bolting; and thermal fatigue cracking and thermal shock of metallic components.
