Intertek Offers REACH SVHC Services
07 Mar 2008
Producers with products containing Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) chemicals that are published to the Annex XIV list have immediate communication requirements under REACH
Intertek (www.intertek.com) a leading end-to-end environmental compliance solution provider now offers services to help electronics producers comply with all of their REACH obligations. Intertek Ageus Solutions has assisted electronics companies worldwide in complying with environmental requirements such as RoHS, WEEE, China RoHS, Japan Green, Korea RoHS and California Proposition 65.
Producers using substances noted in the REACH Directive’s Annex XIV List of Substances Subject to Authorization already have communication requirements under Article 7 of the REACH Directive (EC 1907/2006). These Annex XIV substances, also known as “Substances of Very High Concern” (SVHC) can be loosely defined as Category 1 & 2 Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reproductive toxicants (CMR), Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxic substances (PBT), and very Persistent and very Bioaccumulatve substances (vPvB).
Intertek has the tools and expertise to help our clients identify their risks associated with SVHC non-compliance and fulfill their REACH SVHC requirements through:
- The determination of a prospective list of SVHCs that impacts our clients products
- Data gathering from supply chain
- Procurement and general consulting support
“The companies we have helped through the SVHC process have found our comprehensive approach to SVHCs to exceed their expectations,” reports Bruce Calder, General Manager of Intertek Health and Environment business unit. “I believe that our global team of experts and our experience in the practical aspects of restricted substance compliance have been instrumental in our successful development of optimized solutions for emerging environmental requirements.”
The EU’s REACH directive will see the registration of some 30,000 substances over 11 years. Unregistered chemicals will be banned from sale, manufacture, or import in the European Union. Given the scope and the consequences of non-compliance with the directive, many companies have concerns about how the directive will impact their business and products, and what steps they have to take to ensure that there will be an EU market for their substances.
