Intertek re-opens Immingham Docks Laboratory, one year after tidal surge destroyed previous Humberside facility
19 Jan 2015
Intertek, the leading quality solutions provider to industries worldwide, has confirmed its commitment to the Humberside oil and gas industry with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art 300m² petroleum testing and inspection laboratory in the heart of Immingham Docks.
The site re-opens one year after the devastation caused by a tidal surge and resulting flooding destroyed the existing dockside facility. The surge caused by the highest tide since 1953 resulted in millions of pounds of damage to businesses in the busiest stretch of estuary for commercial shipping in Britain.
The £500k rebuild in its unrivalled dockside location, where it has had a presence for over 40 years, enables Intertek to once again provide a full and comprehensive inspection and testing service for shipping in the busy Humber Estuary, as well as other analytical assessment services to business in the area.
Intertek’s re-built facilities are also located right in the heart of the action on Immingham docks, close to the storage terminals and alongside a bio-diesel plant to which Intertek provides on-site analysis support for its processes.
UK & Eire Chief Executive Rob van Dorp said: “Intertek is committed to providing local inspection and testing services in the long term to oil and gas clients in the Humberside area, where we have been operating for over 40 years. Our unrivalled Immingham location enables us to work closely with our partners in the area to provide analytical services right on the dockside.”
David Breach, Business Line leader, Cargo & AA said: “Despite the devastating storm surge destroying the facility here at Immingham, our staff have worked tirelessly this year with other Intertek laboratories to ensure that client services have not been affected. The commitment of our clients and staff is rewarded with this new, rebuilt site in the best location, right at the heart of oil and gas loading and off-loading activity.”
The Immingham laboratory works in collaboration with Intertek’s other Cargo and Analytical Assessment sites across the UK to provide a comprehensive service for clients from Scotland to the Solent in all of the main ports in the UK.
With over 20 experienced personnel at the new facility including laboratory chemists, inspectors and support staff, Intertek will continue to provide first class services to its clients. Immingham is also part of Intertek’s UK apprenticeship programme which offers around 15 apprenticeships across the UK every year.
Intertek oil and gas expertise in the UK includes crude oil, natural gas, petroleum refining support, inspection, certification, metering, calibration, safety and other related services. Intertek also provides testing and inspection services for the petrochemical and biofuel industries. Intertek staff support exploration and production, product transportation and quality control services.
