Intertek Sustainability Assurance in Action During Wales Beach Clean Event
20 Sep 2021
Cardiff, Wales, UK: Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is proud to announce it has participated in a beach clean event on the stunning Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire. The September 17 event was organised on behalf of the Marine Conservation Society in conjunction with their Great British Beach Clean 2021 initiative. Representatives from Greenlink Interconnector Ltd, a key Intertek client developing a 190km electricity interconnector to link the power grids of Ireland and Great Britain, were also present.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is a reputable registered charity focused on improving the health of our oceans. The MCS’s Great British Beach Clean is a week-long citizen science event during which data is collected from across hundreds of beach cleans along the UK’s coastlines. Intertek and Greenlink surveyed a 100 m stretch of beach to quantify the most prevalent marine litter and then fed back the data points to MCS for their environmental improvement campaign. Intertek and Greenlink also cleaned the entire intertidal beach area, managing to remove a total of 36 kg of rubbish from the beach. The beach clean event supports MCS’s Great British Beach Clean Initiative.
Intertek’s participation was inspired by its core purpose to bring quality, safety and sustainability to life, and the event was particularly relevant to Intertek’s work conducting bathing and shellfish water compliance assessments. Intertek experts have worked for the majority of UK water utility companies delivering complex modelling-based bathing and shellfish assessments using its bespoke STORM-IMPACT tool which helps assess compliance with European Union Bathing and Shellfish Water Directives.
Freshwater West beach, one of Wales’s top surfing locations and the site of Dobby’s Grave (the house elf from Harry Potter), provided a perfect backdrop as it is also the location of a significant project in which Intertek’s marine cables experts are providing Greenlink with consultancy services. Intertek’s work will help Greenlink deliver their proposed 500MW capacity subsea and underground interconnector cable linking EirGrid’s Great Island substation in County Wexford (Ireland) and National Grid’s Pembroke substation in Pembrokeshire (Wales) with landfall occurring at Freshwater West beach.
Frank Beiboer, Managing Director for Intertek Energy & Water, said: “This was a fantastic event for Intertek to be involved in, and we were pleased to be able to support the Marine Conservation Society in their beach clean campaign, alongside our trusted partner, Greenlink. It was particularly exciting to be able to get colleagues back together again following the COVID lockdown, partaking in such a worthwhile cause jointly with one of our key clients. The event was a perfect complement to Intertek’s track record in delivering Total Sustainability Assurance to the marine sector.”
Intertek are industry leaders in delivering studies that help our clients secure compliance, reduce costs and manage risks across a range of marine sectors, supporting and advising them throughout their project lifecycle.
