Thermal-Oxidative Stability of Plastics Using a Specimen Rotator Within An Oven ASTM D3012, GM9059P

Scope:
This test evaluates the heat aging characteristics of plastic specimens. The method was originally developed for polypropylene but other plastics can be tested. A bi-axial rotator and an air recirculation oven ensure uniform exposure to all specimens.

Test Procedure:
The test specimens are mounted in the clips on the biaxial rotator - spacers, such as teflon tape, are used to thermally insulate the specimens from the clips. The oven temperature and test time can be determined from the appropriate material specification. The test can either be run for a specified period and then evaluated, or the samples can be evaluated at set periods to yield a time to failure.

Specimen size:
ASTM - 10mm x 50mm x 1mm molded to size or cut from a larger piece. GM - The test specimen is machined to no more than 75mm x 25mm x 3.2mm, with a 45° bevel on one end.

Data:
Thermal degradation is determined by visual examination.
