Health Canada has adopted the new Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations, SOR/2016-152, proposed on June 29, 2016. The new regulations will be effective for cribs, cradles and bassinets manufactured, imported, sold or advertised in Canada, including those given away or sold second-hand, from December 29, 2016; six months from the date of publication in the Canada Gazette.

The new SOR/2016-152, intends to improve the safety of these products as well as to harmonize the Health Canada requirements with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission rules for these products.

Key revisions to the regulations include:

  • A ban on traditional drop side cribs, cradles, bassinets and accessories
  • Update in performance requirements and test methods for:
    • Structural integrity of mattress supports
    • Crib slat strength
    • Correct assembly of key structural components
    • Accessories and stands intended for use with cribs, cradles and bassinets
    • Maximum rest angle and maximum flatness angle
    • Completely bounded openings
    • Maximum height of corner posts
    • Stability
    • Occupant restraints and cord length
