The new Japan Toy Safety Standard ST 2016 was published in February 2016, and will be effective from 1 April 2016. The previous version, ST 2012 (5th edition), shall remain valid until 31 March 2018.

During this transition period, the Japan Toy Association (JTA) will accept either standard, ST 2012 (5th edition) or ST 2016, for the ST Certification Mark application.

In ST 2016, certain physical and flammability requirements are revised with refer to ISO 8124 Part 1 and Part 2.

Following are highlights of the revisions:

  • ST 2016, Part 1 – Physical requirement:
    • Overall revisions for “Projectiles”
    • New criteria for “toy fasteners”
    • New criteria for “bath toys”
    • Clarifications of the criteria for “Batteries” (button cell batteries, etc.)
  • ST 2016, Part 2 – Flammability requirements:
    • Clarifications of the criteria for “Flammability”
