Vol. 901 | 24 Mar 2016

On 17 March 2016, the New Zealand Government published Gazette no. 24, declaring the current Product Safety Standards (Children’s Nightwear and Limited Daywear Having Reduced Fire Hazard) Regulations 2008 will be replaced by the Product Safety Standards (Children’s Nightwear and Limited Daywear Having Reduced Fire Hazard) Regulations 2016. It comes into force on 18 April 2016 with a 12-month transition period for industry to comply.

Under the new regulation 2016, the recently updated standard AS/NZS 1249 : 2014 will be adopted as mandatory standard to revoke the current standard of AS/NZ 1249: 2003 Children’s Nightwear and Limited Daywear Having Reduced Fire Hazard, as amended by Amendment A: 2008.

There are a number of significant changes to the new standard, here are the key differences in AS/NZS 1249: 2014

  • a more comprehensive list of inclusion and exclusion
  • a new cautionary label has been introduced
  • a new test for the hazard of molten material has been developed and included in Category 1
  • Simplify the test and test requirement, e.g., several trim types have been deleted from the trim requirements, trim requirements for Categories 1 and 2 are now the same, flame spread tests for Category 1 have been streamlined
  • Rationales are now provided in the new Appendix C
  • Where products are offered for online sale, clear and legible fire hazard information shall be provided as part of the online image and product description.
