The Ministry of Customs and Trade of Turkey has proposed to amend the safety requirements for certain consumer products under the Communique published in Official Gazette No. 29701.

The proposed requirements are highlighted as follows:

  • Novelty lighters
    • shall not be placed on the market
  • Food imitation products
    • shall not lead to drowning, poisoning, or puncturing or blockage in the digestive system when consumed, sucked or swallowed by consumers, especially children
      Conformity shall be demonstrated through testing according to TS EN 71-1
  • Decorative products growing in liquid (commonly known as ‘water beads’)
    • shall not be placed on the market in stationery shops, toy shops and school canteens; also, they shall not be sold to children wherever it is possible to place them on the market
    • the packaging of these products shall not attract children's attention
    • product labels shall include a warning that could be seen during purchase that the product shall not be used for play purposes
  • Balloons filled with volatile gas
    • any volatile gases other than helium shall not be used to fill balloons
    • where balloons containing volatile gas are placed on the market, information text of A4 size at least (297 mm x 210 mm) shall be put a proper place in order to inform the consumers that the balloons are filled with helium gas and the helium gas is not a flammable gas
  • Standards for certain consumer products
    • the following standards for showing conformity with essential requirements for certain consumer products are proposed to be added to the Annex of the Communique:
