EU – Amendment to Allergenic Fragrance Requirements under Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC Approved
Vol. 1207 | 17 Dec 2020
The European Commission has published Directives (EU) 2020/2088 and 2020/2089 to amend Annex II to the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, regarding allergenic fragrances in toys. Member States shall apply the amendments from 5 July 2022.
Below is the summary of the new requirements:
Amendments to the list of allergenic fragrances which require labelling
The Commission will amend the list of allergenic fragrances which require labelling by adding 61 substances and adding 2 CAS numbers to Citronellol (1117-61-9 and 7540-51-4). The name of a listed allergenic fragrance shall be stated if the fragrance is added to a toy or its component at a concentration exceeding 100 mg/kg.
Prohibition of 3 allergenic fragrances
The following 3 allergenic fragrances will be banned:
Name of allergenic fragrance | CAS number |
Atranol (2,6-Dihydroxy-4-methyl-benzaldehyde) | 526-37-4 |
Chloroatranol (3-Chloro-2,6-Dihydroxy-4-methyl-benzaldehyde) | 57074-21-2 |
Methyl heptine carbonate | 111-12-6 |
The above ban will not apply to traces of the fragrances which are technically unavoidable under good manufacturing practice and which do not exceed 100 mg/kg.
As methyl heptine carbonate will become a prohibited fragrance, it will be removed from the list of allergenic fragrances which require labelling from 5 July 2022.
