The Australian Government has published Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020, which sets out the mandatory requirements of Aquatic Toys. It is effective immediately. The previous Consumer Protection Notice No 2 of 2009, Consumer Product Safety Standard for Flotation Toys and Aquatic Toys can still be applied for a transitional period of 24 months, until 13 June 2022.

According to the new Standard, an aquatic toy shall comply with the requirements for “Aquatic toy” in the standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.1: 2019, or the requirements of “Aquatic toy” in the standard ISO 8124-1:2018.

In addition, aquatic toys shall carry a statement indicating that the product is not a life-saving device, followed by a warning that the toy should only be used in shallow water and under supervision.

Note – An Aquatic Toy is a product that is designed:

  1. to bear the mass of a child under the age of 14; and
  2. for use in play in shallow water by a child;
