Australia – Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020 Approved

The Australian Government has published Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020, which sets out the mandatory requirements for Projectile Toys. It is effective immediately. The previous Consumer Protection Notice No. 16 of 2010, Consumer Product Safety Standard for Children’s Projectile Toys can still be applied for a transitional period of 12 months, until 13 June 2021.

According to the new Standard, a projectile toy shall comply with one of the following requirements:

1. The requirements of “Projectile toys” and “Rotors and propellers” of AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2019, but omitting the warning requirements and statements in the instruction for use about aiming at the eyes or face.
2. The requirements of “Mouth-actuated projectile toys” and “Projectile toys” of EN 71-1:2014 + A1:2018, but omitting the warning requirements about aiming at the eyes and face AND improvised projectile fired by a bow.
3. The requirements of “Projectile toys” and “Rotors and propellers” of ISO 8124-1:2018, but omitting the warning requirements and statements in the instruction for use about aiming at the eyes or face.
4. The requirements of “Projectile toy” of ASTM F963-17.

In addition, for a projectile toy that is able to launch a projectile more than 300 mm, both the instructions and the packaging of the toy shall carry the following warning, or a warning having the same meaning: “WARNING: Do not aim at eyes or face.”

Note - a projectile toy is a product that:

1. is designed or clearly intended for use in play by a child under 14 years of age; and
2. is capable of launching a projectile.
