The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has announced the addition of 2 new Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) to the Candidate List.

The substances are detailed below for reference.

The substances have identified uses in products, such as inks or toners, and in the production of plastics and tyres.

Producers and importers of articles containing substances included in the Candidate List have six months from addition to notify ECHA if the following conditions apply:

  • the substance is present in those articles in quantities over one tonne per producer or importer per year, and
  • the substance is present in those articles above a concentration of 0.1% weight by weight.

The suppliers of articles which contain these substances in a concentration above 0.1% (w/w) must also provide sufficient information to allow safe use of the article to their customers, or upon request, to a consumer within 45 days of the receipt of the request. This information must contain as a minimum, the name of the substance.

This addition brings the total number of SVHCs on the list to 211. A link to the full candidate list of SVHCs is below:

In addition, effective from 5 January 2021, article suppliers must notify substances of very high concern in their articles to ECHA’s SCIP database under the Waste Framework Directive.
