Vol. 1291 | 24 Feb 2022

The New Zealand Government has published the Unsafe Goods (Inclined Infant Sleep Products) Indefinite Prohibition Notice 2022, repealing the previous Unsafe Goods (Inclined Infant Sleep Products) Notice 2020.

Pursuant to section 31 of the Fair Trade Act 1986, the prohibition notice declares inclined infant sleep products, intended for children under the age of one year, as unsafe. Consequently, the notice prohibits, indefinitely, the supply, offer, or advertising of said goods, as of February 9, 2022. This notice comes to mitigate the risk of infant deaths attributed to the use of inclined infant sleep goods.

  • The prohibition does not apply to:
  • Child restraints
  • Prams and strollers
  • Slings and baby carriers
  • Inclined infant sleep products with an adjustable incline angle less than seven degrees from the horizontal plane
  • Products that are not designed for play and/or the amusement of infants and young children.
  • Products that are not intended for prolonged periods of sleep
