EU Updates Harmonized Standards for GPSD

The European Commission published updates on the list of European standards for products drafted in support of the General Products Safety Directive (GPSD). On December 2, 2024, the Commission published Decision (EU) 2024/2962, which withdrew four specific standards related to outdoor furniture, paragliding equipment, and baby walking frames. These updates will take effect immediately.

Key changes

The list of European standards is provided in the Decision (EU) 2019/1698. On 2 December 2024, the European Commission published Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/2962 to update the list of European standards in Official Journal. Four standards are withdrawn:

  • EN 581-1:2006 Outdoor furniture – Seating and tables for camping, domestic and contract use – Part 1: General safety requirements
  • EN 12491:2001 Paragliding equipment – Emergency parachutes – Safety requirements and test methods
  • EN 1651:1999 Paragliding equipment – Harnesses – Safety requirements and strength tests
  • EN 1273:2005 Child use and care articles – Baby walking frames – Safety requirements and test methods

The updates shall enter into force immediately.

Please be aware that the GPSD will be repealed on 13 December 2024, and will be replaced by the General Product Safety Regulations (GPSR). The list of European standards supporting the GPSD is expected to remain effective under the GPSR.

What is the GPSD?

The General Product Safety Directive (GPSD), established by the European Union under Directive 2001/95/EC, sets forth essential safety requirements for consumer products to ensure they are safe for use. The directive applies to a wide range of products not covered by specific sector legislation, including toys, household goods, and personal care items. Its primary objectives are to protect consumer health and safety while facilitating the proper functioning of the internal market.
