The Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India has approved the Cookware and Utensils (Quality Control) Order 2024.

Cookware and utensils shall comply with the relevant standards from the list below:

  • IS 14756:2022 Stainless Steel Cookware
  • IS 1660:2009 Wrought Aluminium Utensils
  • IS 13983:1994 Stainless Steel Sinks for Domestic Purposes
  • IS 9396 (Part 1):1987 Round Open Top Sanitary Cans for Foods and Drinks-Tinplate
  • IS 14407:1996 Aluminium Cans for Beverages

All products in scope of this regulation shall bear the Standard Mark as an indication of compliance.

This Quality Order shall enter into force on 1 September 2024. The effective date for small enterprises and micro enterprises are 1 December 2024 and 1 March 2024 respectively.

Some of the highlights of the five technical standards are listed below:

IS 14756 – 2022

This standard is applicable to cooking utensil, serving utensils, table utensils and storage utensils that are made of stainless steel.

The stainless steel used for utensils shall conform to IS 5522 or IS 15997. The material used for composite bottom shall be as per IS 15960. Products shall also comply with the requirements of shape and dimensions, workmanship and labelling.

IS 1660 – 2009

This standard is applicable to wrought aluminium utensil, thick bottom utensils, compartmental trays and lunch boxes. Products shall meet the requirements of material, fabrication, shape and dimension, handles, workmanship and finish and labelling.

IS 13983 – 1994

Sit-on and inset type stainless steel sinks shall comply with the requirements of materials, dimension, construction and workmanship, finish and labelling.

IS 9396 Part 1 – 1987

This standard is applicable to tin plate for round open top sanitary cans. First grade electrolytic tinplate of baseplate shall be used, and meet the following chemical composition requirements:

Note: MR = Medium residual, L = Low metalloid

Other requirements include tinplate thickness & dimensions, tin coating, surface finish, tin grain size, iron solution value, surface oil, passivation treatment and labelling.

IS 14407 – 1996

This standard is applicable to two-piece aluminium cans for alcoholic, non-alcoholic and beverage.

Products shall also comply with the requirements of internal finish, external coating, shape and dimension and labelling.
