Australia Approved Safety Standard for Infant Products

Australia's government has published the Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024 and Consumer Goods (Infant Products) Information Standard 2024 in the federal register of legislation.
Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024
This Standard applies to infant sleep products. Folding cots, household cots, and bassinets shall comply with relevant specific requirements respectively and the general requirements. Other infant sleep products shall comply with the general requirements.
Antique or collectable cots do not need to comply with the requirements. However, they are required to have this warning: "WARNING: This cot does not meet the mandatory safety standard. For display purposes only. It is dangerous to place a child in this cot.
During the transition period (before 19 January 2026):
- A folding cot shall comply with either Consumer Product Safety Standard for Children’s Portable Folding Cots or the requirements of this Safety Standard.
- A household cot shall comply with either Consumer Product Safety Standard: Children’s Household Cots or the requirements of this Safety Standard.
After 19 January 2026, the following shall be repealed:
- Consumer Product Safety Standard for Children’s Portable Folding Cots (Consumer Protection Notice No. 4 of 2008)
- Consumer Product Safety Standard: Children’s Household Cots (Consumer Protection Notice No. 6 of 2005)
Consumer Goods (Infant Products) Information Standard 2024
This Standard applies to infant products.
If the product is manufactured in Australia or New Zealand, the manufacturer’s name (or trade mark) and address shall be marked on the product.
If the product is not manufactured in Australia or New Zealand, the product’s country of origin and the Australian importer or distributor’s name shall be marked on the product.
The following safety information shall be accompanied with the infant product:
- instructions on how to assemble the product and a list of the product’s parts
- instructions on how to fold or collapse the product and the reverse
- the dimensions of the mattress recommended by the manufacturer
- instructions on how to adjust the height of the product;
- a warning that consists of the words “WARNING: check this product regularly before using it, and do not use it if any part is loose or missing or if there are any signs of damage. Do not substitute parts. Contact the manufacturer if replacement parts or additional instructions are needed”
Warnings on the product and packaging:
The following warnings with safety alert symbol shall be marked on all infant products:
- WARNING: infant should be placed to sleep on a firm, flat surface
- WARNING: do not put objects or accessories in an infant’s sleep environment
- WARNING: place infant on their back when using this product
- WARNING: do not place this product near a blind, door, cord, strap or similar item that could become wrapped around an infant’s neck
The following additional warnings with safety alert symbol shall be marked on an inclined non-sleep product:
- WARNING: Do not use this product for infant sleep
- WARNING: Do not leave infant in this product unsupervised
If plastic packaging or wrapping is included, the following warning with safety alert symbol shall appear on the plastic packaging: “WARNING: TO AVOID DANGER OF SUFFOCATION TO BABIES AND CHILDREN, DISPOSE OF PLASTIC PACKAGING IMMEDIATELY”. An internationally recognised safety alert symbol that consist of a triangle with an exclamation mark inside shall be included. It shall be at least 6 mm high.
If an infant product is sold through an electronic platform, the required warnings on the products shall be provided on the platform.
