U.S. CPSC revised the Safety Standard for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs and Play Yards

CPSC Updates Safety Standards for Baby Cribs, Play Yards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently issued a direct final rule to update the safety standards for non-full-size baby cribs and play yards, codified under 16 CFR parts 1220 and 16 CFR 1221, respectively. This action reflects the CPSC’s ongoing commitment to enhancing product safety for infants and toddlers.

The direct final rule incorporates by reference the most recent version of ASTM F406-24, the “Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs/Play Yards.”, with the following exclusions of some tests and requirements:

16 CFR 1220 Safety Standard for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs

  • Scissoring, Shearing, or Pinching (Section 5.6.2 to 5.6.2.4)
  • Mattress (Section 5.16.2)
  • Bassinet/Cradle Accessories – Missing Accessories Attachment Components (Section 5.19 to 5.19.2.2)
  • Performance Requirements for Mesh/Fabric Products (Section 7)
  • Side Deflection and Strength Tests for Mesh/Fabric Products (Section 8.11 to 8.11.2.4)
  • Floor Strength Test for Mesh/Fabric Products (Section 8.12 to 8.12.2.2)
  • Mesh Opening Test (Section 8.14 to 8.14.2)
  • Test for Strength of Mesh and Integrity of Attachment (Section 8.15 to 8.15.3.3)
  • Mesh/Fabric Attachment Strength Test Method (Section 8.16 to 8.16.3)
  • Mattress Vertical Displacement Test (Section 8.28 to 8.28.3.2)
  • Top Rail Configuration Test (Section 8.29 to 8.29.3)
  • Top Rail to Corner Post Attachment Test (Section 8.30 to 8.30.5)
  • Bassinet and Cradle Accessory—Sleep Surface Collapse/Tilt (Section 8.31 to 8.31.9)
  • Marking and Labelling (9.6.1 to 9.6.1.4)

16 CFR 1221 Safety Standard for Play Yards

  • Mattresses for Rigid Sided Products (Section 5.17)
  • Record Keeping (Section 5.20)
  • Performance Requirements for Rigid Sided Products (Section 6)
  • Test methods (Section 8.1 to 8.10.5)
  • Additional warning statements for rigid sided rectangular products with removable mattress (Section 9.5.2.1)

The updated standards will become effective on April 5, 2025.
