In the European Union, “other substances” are defined as substances other than vitamins or minerals with a nutritional or physiological effect used in food and/or food supplements (e.g., botanicals, plant extracts).  The use of “other substances” is only partially harmonised in the EU. Therefore, the Heads of European Food Safety Agencies (HoA) established the working group “Food  Supplements” (HoA WG FS), which is comprised of members from 26 states, to discuss the oversight and assessment of certain “other substances”. On June 6, 2024, the First report of the HoA working group “Food Supplements” was released. The report proposes restrictions or bans on certain substances under a defined procedure, citing concerns related to overconsumption and associated health risks.
