What is SEMI E188?

SEMI E188 is a cybersecurity standard that ensures both new and existing semiconductor manufacturing equipment are free from malware during delivery, installation, and maintenance.

SEMI E188 applies to equipment suppliers, equipment users, and hardware and software component suppliers and extends cybersecurity protections to all computational components located in a manufacturing facility used in the production of semiconductors, ensuring a malware-free environment throughout the equipment lifecycle. Manufacturing executing systems (MES), Material control systems (MCS) and other computing devices provided by the factory are excluded from this standard.

Key Requirements of SEMI E188:

  • Access Control to Manufacturing Equipment
  • Secure Equipment Installation
  • Equipment Upgrade and Support
  • Equipment Restoration and Integrity

What to Expect from a SEMI E188 Assessment:

  • Pre-assessment Preparation:
    • Initial review of equipment and existing security protocols.
    • Identification of potential gaps in compliance.
  • Evaluation:
    • Detailed review of procedures and evidence for the following required activities:
      • malware scanning
      • computer system hardening
      • network security management
      • vulnerability management
      • access control
    • Reporting:
      • Comprehensive report detailing the compliance with the requirements of E188.
      • Documentation to support end-user acceptance.
